Hustle & Strive? Or Flow & Thrive?

"Whether you think you Can or you Can't, you're right" -- Henry Ford

If "hustling" and hard work is what you believe gets you where you want it to be, then you must honour your belief. If you believe intuition, synchronicity and attracting your true clientele works better, honour that. If you believe Henry Ford, like him or not, then either way, you're correct. In business, there are two prevailing schools of thought, essentially captured by:

  • Cast a wide net. "You never know where your best client / idea / opportunity will come from".
  • "Trust your gut". Intuitively, you'll find what you need, if you make the time to hear yourself.

I've experienced both, and have seen clients in both, and I now truly believe, "whether you think you Can or you Can't, you're right". In the end, you decide. What can you sustain for the next 5, 10, 15 years? Consultants, coaches, naturopaths, speakers, authors, creatives - serial entrepreneurs or small business owners - forget what everyone else expects of you or what you definitively announced and may have to recant. What setting or environment, what pace of life and work, truly brings out your best?

Hustle & Strive

"Entrepreneur magazine says...", "Inc.com suggests...", "My business coach says..."

If you have chosen this path because everything at the core of your being says "This is It! This feels right! This speaks to my drive, my motivation!", then do it. If your decision to go this way is rooted in your "guru's" advice - whoever that may be - I'd just like to invite you to check in with yourself to see if it really fits.

Hustle and strive works for those who are driven by a cause, by adrenaline and vasopressin, often by external challenges and a "go-go-go" essence. Many call it a masculine energy mechanism, but please note that masculine energy is embodied by both men and women in various activities. While the female body is biologically designed to thrive on oxytocin, running on adrenaline occasionally is fine.

What this means for women, and those built that way, in the hustle and strive mindset is this - set hours where you get to "just be", rather than "go-go-go" 24/7.

  • Set an alarm, or a trigger, to stop working and wind down 1 hour before bed. Rationale: this will help switch your brain off so it doesn't start multi-tasking just as your head hits the pillow.
  • Go for a stroll, sit in a park, have a belly laugh for at least 15-20 mins at a time. Rationale: this gets you away from the adrenaline, vasopressin strain on your body & mind, for a few minutes.
  • Allow yourself to receive, and really soak up what you receive, each day. Rationale: this gets the oxytocin levels up as you "just be" for a moment. From compliments to gifts, just receive.

There are other ways, of course, and as I'm just sharing from my experience and those of clients and peers who've shared their own, I'm sure you can find others that speak to you. The point is to just prevent burn-out, so you don't have to take time off to get better. More, ensure that if you're doing the Hustle & Strive, it's because You believe in it.

Flow & Thrive

"Mind Body Green magazine says...", "Inc.com suggests...", "My business coach says..."

You know that your "work" is getting and staying clear on what lies within, on what your intrinsic guidance centre draws you to. For life and for business, if you "...get it! Everything I need truly lies within or guides me just where I need to be!", then do it. If, however, someone who says this, but is constantly trying to bring others to 'do it their way' has put this idea in your head, check in to see what you truly believe and let go of what you don't. Trust Yourself.

Flow and thrive works for those who tune into who and what they attract and course correct accordingly, who go where they thrive, who receive opportunities through synchronicity - right place, right time, and who slow down to see the bigger picture. Unlike the "go-go-go" mode of operation, this taps into oxytocin, allowing you to serve clients from a place of "overflow of my own well-being". As implied above, this path is fine for both, but men often prefer "go-go-go".

What this means for men, and those built that way, in the flow and thrive mindset is this - set hours where you get to "go-go-go".

  • Keep playing sports, go for a run, do rigorous activity as often as you need. Rationale: this gets your blood moving your adrenaline and vasopressin, which keeps you going.
  • Allow yourself to give, and feel free to enjoy the feeling in fosters in you. Rationale: this moves your 'provider, protector' triggers, which is often connected to you natural drivers.

Again, I'm just sharing from my loved ones' experiences and others'. Whatever you need, trust that, and go for it. The point is to just to keep the flame lit so you don't quit out of boredom. More, ensure that if you're doing the Flow & Thrive, it's because You believe in it.
